A team of international scientists from Oxford University and Stony brook University have asserted that the modern day elephants must have had their ancestors as water animals. The researchers analysed the various atoms present in the tooth enamel and concluded that the ancestors of elephants must have been water borne. The research revealed that the ancestor animals grazed on plants in rivers similar to a hippopotamus.
